Ideas for a Harry Potter Party
Harry Potter themed parties can be a lot of fun and a great success. Here are some simple ideas for making your party a hit.
For a great selection of Harry Potter Costumes check out the selection at Costume Discounters.
Several weeks before your party send out invitations with map like instructions to get to your house. Better yet use an invisible ink felt tip pen – just make sure to include a decoder pen as well! Explain that guests should come dressed as a Harry Potter character.
Decorate your party area like the Great Hall at Hogwarts school. Hang some candles over the table, tape some half moons and stars from the ceiling and have an abundant supply of plastic snakes and spiders.
On your front door, make sure to have a sign for “Platform 9 3/4,” as this is the train platform for the “Hogwarts Express” – all aboard!
Arriving guests can be placed in 4 different groups representing the 4 houses of Hogwarts, the Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Gryffindor and Slytherin. These 4 groups can compete in various games, such as the following game of “Quidditch”
With a party for children, you can have them play the wizard game of Quidditch. This can be played with brooms and a ball and set-up with 2 opposing goals. Sort of a twist on broom hockey.
Another great game could be Harry Potter trivia. Divide up into teams and select a number of questions from Harry Potter books or movies.
Have the children make their own magic wands using wooden dowels, glitter and paper cut outs. Add some markers and anything else that might come in handy.
You can also conduct a “Potions” class for children. A good recipe is to mix 2 cups Elmer’s glue with 1 and a half cups of water. Mix in a few drops food coloring, ie green – add 2/3 cup warm water with 2 teaspoons of borax -watch what happens!
Snacks can be served in cauldrons or pots and labeled as favorite Harry Potter Treats, such as Bertie Botts or chocolate frogs. Drinks could be served in plastic goblets.
When the party is over and guests leave, they can be given a Harry Potter gift bag including such things as jelly beans, wizard hats and lightening tattoos! Use your imagination and creativity and you too can have an awesome Harry Potter Party
These are all great ideas for a Harry Potter party. I particularly like the “potions” class. I’d be interested to see what happens!
